Process of Booking a Portrait

Booking a custom pet portrait is simple and personalized to ensure the best result. Here’s how the process works:

  1. Initial contact: Start by reaching out to me with your request. You can send me an email at art@pamslaats.com detailing the type of portrait you’re looking for, along with any special requirements.

  2. Photo selection: Once we've discussed your preferences, I’ll need high-quality photos of your pet. For tips on capturing the best reference photos, please refer to my photo guidelines at the bottom of this page. I recommend sending a selection of images to capture different angles and expressions. I’ll help you choose the best one to work from, ensuring the portrait reflects your pet's character.

  3. Quote and timeline: After reviewing your photos and requirements, I’ll provide a personalized quote based on the size and complexity of the portrait. I’ll also give you an estimated completion time, which typically ranges from a few weeks to a couple of months depending on my schedule.
  4. Mock-up: After receiving your photos, I’ll create a rough mock-up for you. This mock-up allows you to choose your preferred composition and background before I begin the actual artwork. At this stage, we work closely together to adjust details, ensuring that everything—from the pets’ postures to background colors—is exactly as you envision.

  5. Deposit: A deposit is required to secure your spot in my schedule. Once this is received, I’ll begin work on your portrait.

  6. Creation: I’ll spend many hours working on your portrait to ensure every detail is just right. During the process, I’ll keep you updated and share progress if requested.

  7. Final review and delivery: Once the portrait is finished, I’ll send you a preview for approval. After any final touches, the artwork will be carefully packaged and shipped to you, or you can arrange to collect it in person. All artwork is shipped flat in protective packaging.

  8. Receiving your portrait: The portraits are delivered unmounted and unframed, giving you the flexibility to choose your preferred framing style. Each portrait includes a care sheet with detailed instructions on the best way to frame and preserve your artwork. The artwork will also be presented with a signed, stamped and dated Certificate of Authenticity. When your portrait arrives, I’d love to hear that it reached you safely—please feel free to send me an email.

Feel free to reach out at any stage if you have questions or special requests. I look forward to creating something truly special for you!

Questions & Answers

How long is the lead time?

The delivery time depends on the size, complexity of the portrait, and other waiting commissions. Each pet portrait is very detailed and requires significant time to complete. I will provide an estimated lead time when you place your order.

If you have a specific deadline, please get in touch to see if it can be arranged.

Can you create portraits of multiple pets?

Yes, I can create a portrait featuring multiple animals. The options will depend on your specific preferences, the size of the artwork, and other details. I’ll provide a personalized quote based on your needs. Please feel free to send me a message to discuss your ideas, and I’ll be happy to see what’s possible!

Is framing/matting possible?

Unfortunately, framing or matting is not available. However, your portrait will be securely packaged with a detailed care sheet, providing instructions on how to handle and frame it properly.

Do you also draw people?

I don’t offer human portraits, I specialize in capturing the essence of a variety of animals. Whether it’s a dog, cat, horse, rabbit, bird, or a more uncommon animal, I’d be excited to bring their unique personalities to life in a custom portrait. Each animal has its own charm, and I truly enjoy exploring the beauty and diversity of different species through my art.

PHOTO GUIDE

A good photo is essential when creating your pet portrait. The better the photo, the better the drawing!

Having several photos from different angles will greatly help in capturing the animal's appearance. I typically work from one main photo, but if you send a selection, it will help me get a sense of your pet’s character.

If you don’t have many photos, feel free to share what you have, and I’ll do my best to work with the images provided. I would also appreciate a description of your pet, including their personality, story, or anything else you’d like to share.

Some tips for a great photo:

  • High-resolution photos taken with a camera are preferred.
  • Natural lighting is best; ideally, the photo should be taken by a window or outdoors in with no direct sunlight. I need to see your pet's eyes clearly.
  • The photo should be taken at the same level as your pet.
  • Zooming in should reveal detailed features in the face, such as individual hairs and a good reflection in the eyes.

Photos that are not suitable:

  • Too much distance: Photos taken from too far away result in insufficient detail, making it difficult to capture your pet accurately.
  • Blurry or low quality: Blurry or low-resolution images fail to show clear details, which can affect the quality of the portrait.
  • Artificial light or flash: Photos taken under artificial lighting or with a flash are generally unsuitable because they can distort the color of the fur and create reflections or glare in the eyes.
